As the Tribal Liaison, you will enable the WSHS to fulfill its obligations for government-to-government consultation with Washington State Tribal Nations per the Centennial Accord by providing expert advice to executive management, internal departments and outside organizations regarding Tribal sovereignty, rights, and areas of cultural sensitivity. You will develop positive relationships and support the advancement of WSHS programmatic initiatives and exhibitions with Northwest Tribes and Tribal organizations by ensuring appropriateTribal input and consultation. You will support our mission of partnering with our communities to explore how history connects us all by leading partnership efforts with Tribal communities and bringing the voice of Native American people, past and present, to the forefront at the Society.
REQUIRED:
A combination of education and recent, relevant experience totaling nine (9) years.
**Qualifying experience includes working directly with Tribal communities and governments as a primary responsibility (knowledge and skill)
AND
Demonstrated knowledge of the unique legal and political government to government relationship between the federal government, Washington state government, and Tribal governments
A strong public service and customer-focus ethic
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to understand and appropriately respond to the Tribal stakeholder, customer, employee and management issues and concerns
Strong written, verbal and presentation skills
Ability to engage and build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
Attention to detail, follow-through, and ability to multi-task
Ability to manage a project effectively, including planning, budgeting, outreach to partners, and implementation.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility
PREFERRED:
7+ years of experience working directly with Tribal communities and governments as a primary responsibility (knowledge and skill)
Lived experience of the issues and challenges facing Washington’s Tribal communities
Ability to work both independently as well as within a team. Leadership experience is a benefit
Knowledge of state and local history
Knowledge of historical society, museum, or heritage/cultural organization best practices.
Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, Powerpoint, Outlook)
